Tax Breaks On Business Equipment To Be Scaled Back
Two important tax breaks that were implemented during the current recession are scheduled to be scaled back and shrink dramatically in 2012. These changes affect the deduction for the purchase of new equipment. One tax break is the section 179 deduction as known in the IRS tax code. The other is called bonus depreciation. Both of these tax breaks were passed by congress to provide incentives for companies to make it easier for small businesses to expand and hire workers. The section 179 allows small businesses to deduct up front rather than depreciate the cost of equipment. The deduction for 2011 is $500,000.00 For 2012 it will drop to $125,000.00 and by 2013 it is expected to be just $25,000.00, the same as in 2002.
Bonus depreciation allows small businesses to take a deduction for equipment expenses beyond the figure allowed by section 179. During 2011, the amount is 100 percent. In 2012 it will be cut to 50%.
You can learn more by reading IRS publication 946″ How to Depreciate Property” by going to www.irs.gov
